Since 1996, Dr Jovanovic has been the director and chief scientific officer at the Sansum Diabetes Institute in Santa Barbara, California. She is also a clinical professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Southern California–Los Angeles Medical Center; an adjunct professor in Biomolecular Science and Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and chief of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic at The Santa Barbara County Health Care Services. She serves on the Slide Kit and Educational Outreach subcommittees of CADRE.

Dr Jovanovic is on the editorial board of several journals, including Diabetes Self-Management, Human Sexuality, and Experimental Biology and Medicine. Her other editorial positions include special editor of the Journal of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology and associate editor of Diabetes Care. Dr Jovanovic has received numerous awards, including the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Outstanding Physician Clinician Award in 1995 and the ADA Norbert Freinkel Award for Scholarship in the Field of Diabetes and Pregnancy in 2001. She also received the Roche Diagnostics/The Zitter Group Diabetes Disease Management Leadership Award in 1998. In addition, she received The Robert and Ray Kroc Award for Excellence in Diabetology, Uppsala, Sweden, in 2002, and the equivalent award from the Ohio State University, which also awarded her a Kroc Visiting Professorship in 2004. In 2003 she received The March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Award to Honor Distinguished Achievement in Maternal-Fetal Nutrition and The Albert Einstein College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnae Award.

Active in clinical research, Dr Jovanovic has published over 350 primary articles, editorials, books, and reviews in the fields of diabetes, obstetrics and gynecology, and islet cell physiology.
